You can find books by digging with your hoe on tiles of dirt or sand where you see earthworms wriggling or while getting treasure chests when fishing. Once found, they can be read by examining individual tiles of the bookcases in the library, including the vertical bookcase.
There are no item rewards associated with locating the lost books, but some give hints towards further activities the player can take.
